AI inside Office apps
If you work in PowerPoint, Excel, and Word, add-ins let AI work inside the program itself: build slides in your presentation, understand spreadsheet formulas, and edit the document. You do not have to switch to the browser.
Available extensions
| Extension | Programs | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Claude for Microsoft 365 | Excel, Word, and PowerPoint | Explains and edits formulas, edits the document with tracked changes you accept or reject, and creates slides using the presentation's template. |
| ChatGPT for PowerPoint | PowerPoint | Builds a presentation from scratch, edits open slides, or reviews the order of the text. |
| Microsoft Copilot | All Office apps | Built into Microsoft apps with Microsoft 365 plans. |
The Claude add-in requires a paid Claude plan. The ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in works even with a free account, with more features on higher plans.
How to install them
- Open the app and go to Insert, then Add-ins (or Get Add-ins).
- Search for Claude or ChatGPT and install the add-in.
- Sign in to your account and a sidebar will appear inside the app.
On a work or school device, add-ins may be blocked and require an administrator to enable them.
Examples to start with

- Excel: “Explain what the formula in this cell calculates” or “Change the discount from 10% to 15% and update the other calculations accordingly.”
