How do you use AI in a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation?

From choosing a topic to references, reading, and writing, without made-up references or problems with your university.

A research partner, not a writer replacing you

A thesis takes months: a topic, references, reading, writing, and review. AI can save substantial time at every stage. Set the rule from the start: the ideas, results, and final writing are yours, and check your university's rules on AI use.

From topic to research question

Literature review

To find studies, use tools that return real papers: Google Scholar, Consensus, Elicit, and Deep Research in Gemini or ChatGPT. Open every paper you will cite and check its title, authors, and year.

Organize references in a program such as Zotero, and ask for help with a comparison table: study, sample, method, and result.

Reading and notes

Upload your chosen papers to Gemini Notebook and ask about them. Answers include the information's location in the paper, making it easy to return to the original. The whole process is in the Gemini Notebook series.

Writing and review

Write the draft yourself and use AI to organize chapters, review language, clarify an unclear paragraph, and critique the argument: “What is this chapter's weakest point?” For statistical analysis, ask it to explain the suitable test and why, and carry it out and understand the result yourself.

Try it in your work
